How Clarifying Shampoo Saved My Hair And Why You Should Add It To Your Hair Care Routine

Everyone talks about the importance of the deep conditioning and hair masques—but does anyone mention the once-a-week (or month) clarifying shampoo? Not really. So today I want to give this category a little love.

Clarifying shampoos, which also go under the names “purifying,” and “deep-cleansing,” are designed to remove stubborn build-up from your hair, like silicones, waxes, moisturizers or plain old stuff from your daily shampoo, conditioner and styling products.

Clarifying shampoos also help wash away mineral deposits from the chlorine and other chemicals that stick to your hair from a swimming pool, which is why it’s very popular to use after swimming or the beach (and if you’re a blonde like me, you know that greenish hair after swimming is a pain to get rid of). So, if you color your hair, use the aforementioned hair masques, or apply any kind of styling products—even dry shampoo—then yes, a bottle of clarifying shampoo definitely needs to be in your shower.

Clarifying shampoo literally saved my hair when toning it into a living nightmare. Up until this year, I’ve used clarifying shampoo without realizing how important using it in-between normal washes. It wasn’t until I was toning my hair (that I do about every 3 months) from home, I “over toned” my blonde hair and it came out BLUE instead of getting rid of the brassy tones. After reading that I am not the only one who hasn’t “over toned” their blonde hair, I read that clarifying shampoo could get the blue out after a couple of washes, and to my surprise, it did this in about two washes! Just a good tip to my fellow blonde friends out there! My blue hair nightmare is a good example of why you shouldn’t use clarifying shampoo after coloring your hair because it will fade it significantly. And because clarifying shampoo will cleanse your hair from the roots, getting rid of dirt and the unwanted oils, it can be quite drying, so be sure to use a good conditioner afterwards!

My favorite clarifying shampoos are Paul Mitchell’s Clarifying Shampoos 2 & 3. They are both paraben free, vegan, and help minimize oil production in your hair so it becomes less oily over time! Two other great clarifying shampoos are Nexxus Hydra-Light Weightless Moisture Shampoo and Neutrogena Anti- Residue Shampoo.
